Jumerca Gama Torrevieja
Grupo Jumerca Gama or Gama as it is commonly known is a medium sized Spanish supermarket that stocks a diverse range of local and international products. Although there is no Gama in Torrevieja city, they are a very handy supermarket when visiting the neighbouring Orihuela Costa. There are two branches in this area, one in the residential area of Villamartin, located on the ground floor of the popular Villamartin Plaza and the other in the central commercial centre of La Florida.
British and Scandinavian Products
Orihuela Costa’s residents and holidaymakers are predominantly British and Scandinavian and Gama have wisely stocked their shelves with a selection of popular British and Scandinavian products, sadly lacking in most Spanish supermarkets. Some examples of their imported products include
- Bisto gravy granules
- Coleman’s English mustard
- Branston pickle
- Worcestershire sauce
- Frozen British bread brands
- Swedish meatballs
- pickled herring
- various imported cheeses.
The bulk of Gama’s products are local brands and their bread and baguettes are baked on site. Their excellent butchery department offers tasters of their various hams and cheeses as well as tasty samples of their cakes and tarts. Most the staff speak very little English but a bit of broken Spanish and some sign language usually does the trick. Like British butchers of old, if you ask for a meat product that is not on display, Gama’s butchers will order it for you, usually by the next day.
Gama is one of the very few supermarkets that publish a monthly discount and offers booklet that is very handy for stocking up on these very reasonable offers which are often up to half price. For those hot summer months, Gama have fridges stocked with ice cold beer and soft drinks as well as bags of ice, perfect for BBQ’s and picnics. Both Orihuela Costa stores have wheelchair access. La Florida one is open Monday to Saturday from 08:30 am – 8:00 pm (Villamartin closes at 7:00 pm) with both opening Sunday & Bank Holidays 08:30 am – 2:00 pm during the summer months and close an hour earlier during winter.
