Playa Flamenca Market
The city of Torrevieja is home to one of the largest street markets in Europe, an excellent indoor fish market and a vibrant night market, and within a 15 minute drive from the city there are a further selection, including the popular Playa Flamenca Market. Unlike a lot of the foreign visitors who spend most of their time browsing for the odd bargain, the Spanish take their markets seriously, and many of them will do their entire weekly fresh produce shopping. Although there are many different supermarkets in the city, when it comes to products such as fruit, vegetables, meat, preserves, pickles and olive oil, Torrevieja’s markets offer a much larger selection at prices you won’t see in any supermarket.
Playa Flamenca Market is a large bustling affair, spread all along Calle Nicolas de Bussi with it’s main entrance opposite the popular Celtic Isle Pub. The vast array of stalls include so many delicious food items it is best to visit with either a full tummy or a full wallet !! There are huge bowls heaped with a mind boggling variety of olives, racks full of cured meats and sausages, delicious pies and pastries, roast chickens, ham hocks, marinaded spare ribs, cheeses, pickles, cakes, sweets and all sorts of fruit. And that’s just what you can eat straight away, you can also find the freshest selection of local vegetables, free range eggs, preserves, exotic herbs and spices, medicinal herbs, house plants, and a colourful array of flowers.
The market has a superb range of leather goods, new and used clothing for all ages, hats in all shapes and sizes, novelty and Disney T-shirts, clothing and hair accessories, jewellery, watches, mobile phone accessories, arts & crafts, pottery, household goods, cleaning products, kitchen utensils, garden furniture, tools, DIY goods and even international newspapers and magazines.
If you don’t find enough to eat at the market, there are a number of bar/restaurants nearby serving a la carte meals and set menu’s of the day. The Celtic Isle Pub has a swimming pool for it’s customers to use which is very handy in the hot summer months. About a 10 minute walk away is the fantastic Zenia Boulevard shopping complex with an impressive range of shops, cafés, restaurants and a Burger King takeaway. Playa Flamenca Market is open every Saturday from 09.00 – 13.00 and if driving, you will need to get there early to find parking close by. Please note : If you are staying near the market and have parked a vehicle anywhere on Calle Nicolas de Bussi, you will need to remove it the night before market day as the stalls start getting erected very early in the morning, and if left there, your vehicle will be towed without hesitation, incurring a hefty fine.
